Steering Column and Grommet

Earlier I posted about the potential conflict between the engine's water intake and the steering column. Now that the engine is in, it's time to resolve the conflict for good. When the steering was installed, spacers were placed beneath the rack to raise the column. The spacers help, but even with the spacers there is a conflict. The resolution is to loosen the rack and rotate it forward. This raises the universal joint and the steering column. It's a close fit, but it leaves just enough room for a hose on the inlet.

The last step is to rivet a plate over the opening where the steering column emerges from the pedal box, below. The plate has a grommet to keep wind and water out of the driver compartment.
