Several of the connectors on the engine wiring harness are known as Weather Pack Connectors. These are rather elaborate fittings for connecting wires, but apparently they are popular and, as the name suggests, more weather proof. The black plastic ends are known as towers and shrouds to avoid confusion with male and female. Inside are the metal male and female terminals. Tiny rubber grommets are used between parts.
For this engine a few of the connectors on the harness are not used because the engine does not have all the sensors that might be available on other cars. So far these are Manifold Air Pressure (MAP), Variable Cam Timing, (VCT), Fuel Pressure, and Spare. (I am told that Spare is used for optional features on some engine control units.) The unused connectors will be plugged, taped, and tie wrapped as shown below.
